Japanese design firm KONEL has developed a puffer jacket that can help a person fall asleep anywhere using light and music. This jacket uses biometric data such as the wearer’s heartbeat and body temperature to generate specific sounds and lighting that create an ideal environment for sleep. At first glance, the jacket looks like an ordinary but oversized puffer jacket, suitable for everyday wear. However, its standout feature is the sleep mode, which activates simply by pulling up the hood. The hood is deep enough to provide a fully calming environment. The jacket’s built-in system uses red light to promote sleep and blue light to help wake the wearer. A specially designed neutral music affects brain waves to deepen sleep. It’s inspired by Japan’s Edo-period “yogi blanket,” which was a hybrid of clothing and bedding. Sensors inside the jacket continuously monitor the user’s sleep and mental stress levels. If stress levels remain high, the system automatically plays more effective sounds to assist with sleep. Japan is among the worst countries in terms of sleep deprivation. Compared to Europeans, Japanese people sleep an average of 1.5 hours less per day, which results in an annual economic loss of around $138 billion.
