Canada bans WeChat on government devices due to security risks, citing spying concerns; action is also taken against Russia’s Kaspersky.

Canada has banned the Chinese app WeChat from government devices. Officials say the app could collect data and threaten privacy.
WeChat is one of the most used apps in the world. People in China, Southeast Asia, and Chinese communities everywhere use it daily.
The ban starts now. Treasury Board President Anita Anand said the government has found no data leaks yet. Still, Canada wants to protect systems before any problem appears.
Canada also blocked the Russian company Kaspersky on similar grounds. Experts warn that both WeChat and Kaspersky pose digital risks.
Analysts compare WeChat to TikTok. They say both apps can expose users to security threats. In 2020, former U.S. President Donald Trump also tried to ban WeChat, but a court stopped the order.
